LLMS.txt Planning Tools

A well-structured file requires you to think like an information architect, carefully selecting and summarizing your most important content. To help you move from theory to practice, we've developed two powerful tools: a collaborative Google Sheets template and an interactive web app. In this post, we'll walk you through how to use these planners to streamline your workflow and create a perfectly structured `llms.txt` file with ease. How to Plan Your llms.txt File: Two Powerful Tools to Get You Started

In our last post, we introduced llms.txt and explained why it's becoming essential for guiding AI. The key to a great llms.txt file isn't just knowing the format; it's planning. Deciding which pages are most important and how to describe them is the most critical step.

To make this process easier, we've developed two powerful tools: a collaborative Spreadsheet Planner and an interactive Web App Generator. Here’s how to use them to create the perfect llms.txt file for your website.

The Spreadsheet Approach: For the Collaborative Planner

If you work in a team or want a permanent, detailed record of your strategy, the spreadsheet is your best friend. It’s perfect for collaboration, allowing multiple team members to contribute and review.

We've created a Google Sheets template to get you started.

How to Use the Spreadsheet

The spreadsheet is designed to be a step-by-step guide. You'll work from left to right, filling in the columns:

  1. URL & Page Title: List the page you want to include and its title.

  2. Priority & Section: Use the dropdown menus to rank the page's importance (High, Medium, or Low) and assign it to a category (Main, Product, Service, etc.).

  3. Page Summary: This is the most important column. Write a concise, one-sentence description of the page.

  4. Key Entities / Keywords: List the main topics of the page here. This is a thinking exercise to help you write a better, more keyword-rich Page Summary.

  5. Generated Markdown Link: This column automatically creates the correctly formatted markdown link for you. No need to write it yourself!

Once you've inventoried all your key pages, you can simply copy the links from the "Generated Markdown Link" column and paste them into a text file under their respective ## Section headers to build your final llms.txt.

The Web App Approach: For the Interactive Generator

If you're working solo or just want to generate your file quickly, our interactive web app is the perfect tool. It combines the planning and generation steps into one seamless experience.

How to Use the Web App

The web app functions as a live spreadsheet.

  1. Edit Directly: Click on any cell to edit its content. You can change URLs, update summaries, and select options from dropdown menus just like in the spreadsheet.

  2. Add & Remove Rows: Use the "Add New Page" button to add more entries and the "×" button to remove any you don't need.

  3. See Live Updates: The "Generated Link" column updates in real-time as you edit, so you can see the final output immediately.

  4. Export Your File: When you're done, click the "Export to llms.txt" button. This will open a window with your complete, formatted file, ready to be copied and uploaded to your website.

Best of all, the app is fully responsive. On a desktop, you'll see a full table, but on a mobile device, it cleverly switches to a card-based view that's easy to use on a smaller screen.

Which Tool Is Right for You?

  • Use the Spreadsheet if: You need to collaborate with a team, want a permanent document of your plan, or prefer the familiar environment of Google Sheets.

  • Use the Web App if: You're working by yourself, want to generate your file quickly, or prefer a more visual, all-in-one tool.

No matter which tool you choose, taking the time to plan will result in a more effective llms.txt file that helps AI understand and accurately represent your website.
