What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation), and Why Should You Care?
For twenty years, "getting found online" has meant one thing: ranking well on Google. But a growing share of people aren't searching Google anymore — they're asking ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Gemini directly, and getting a single, synthesised answer instead of ten blue links.
That shift has given rise to a new discipline: Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO. If you haven't heard the term yet, you will soon — and it's worth understanding now, while most of your competitors are still focused solely on traditional search rankings.
What GEO actually means
Traditional SEO optimises your website so that search engines rank it highly for relevant queries. GEO optimises your content and brand presence so that AI systems — when generating an answer — choose to mention, cite, or recommend you.
These are related disciplines, but they're not the same thing. A page can rank on page one of Google and still be completely invisible inside an AI-generated answer, because the AI model is drawing on a different (and often narrower) set of signals: how clearly your content answers a specific question, whether other trusted sources reference you, and how consistently your brand shows up across the sources the model has learned from.
Why this matters now, not in a year's time
AI answer engines are already meaningfully shaping how people research products, services, and providers — particularly for considered, higher-value purchases where people want a confident summary rather than a list of links to compare themselves. If you work in a professional services, B2B, or specialist consumer space, some of your prospective clients are very likely already forming their first impression of your brand — or your competitors' — through an AI-generated answer, without ever visiting a website.
The organisations paying attention to this early are gaining a real, measurable head start. In our own client work, we've built structured tracking that scores how often and how favourably a brand appears across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot for the questions its potential customers are actually asking — and it consistently surfaces something owners and marketing teams don't expect: strong, well-optimised, Google-page-one content that is barely mentioned by AI systems at all, alongside genuine, addressable gaps in specific sectors or topic areas where a brand simply doesn't come up.
What actually influences GEO performance
A few things repeatedly stand out as levers that move the needle:
Clear, extractable answers. Content written to directly and concisely answer a specific question performs better than content written primarily to rank for a keyword.
Third-party corroboration. AI models weigh what other trusted sources say about you — press coverage, review sites, industry directories, and even Wikipedia — often more heavily than what you say about yourself.
Consistency across the web. Fragmented, contradictory, or outdated information about your business across different sites and platforms actively works against you.
Structured data. Well-implemented schema markup helps machines (not just AI models, but search engines generally) understand what your content actually is and means.
Un-gated proof points. If your strongest evidence — case studies, statistics, credentials — sits behind a login wall or a downloadable PDF, it's effectively invisible to the crawlers that inform AI answers.
Where to start
You don't need to overhaul your entire digital strategy overnight. The most useful first step is simply finding out where you currently stand: which AI platforms mention your brand, for which topics, and how that compares to your direct competitors. From there, the gaps tend to point fairly clearly to what to prioritise next.
GEO isn't replacing SEO — it's sitting alongside it as a second, increasingly important channel for how people find and evaluate businesses. The brands treating it as a genuine strategic priority today are the ones most likely to be the ones AI systems are recommending in twelve months' time.
